Do you lose consciousness on ayahuasca?

No. In an ayahuasca ceremony you do not lose consciousness: you become more aware. You still know where you are, who is with you and what is happening, and you can do everything you need to during the night.
This is one of the most common fears among people who have never received the medicine. Many picture “blacking out”, losing control, waking up with no memory of anything. For those who live the ceremony, the opposite happens.
What changes is perception
Ayahuasca is a medicine of expansion. Instead of taking you out of the moment, it places all of you in it. People who receive it often say they notice details that used to slip past them: the sound of each instrument in a song, the meaning of a word, their own breathing.
That presence also turns inward. Matters you had been avoiding come up clearly, and you can look at them with more calm and more attention than in everyday life.
You stay present from beginning to end
Throughout the ceremony the team is close by, and you can ask for help whenever you need it. The medicine has a beginning, a middle and an end, and the traditional dose we use lasts 4 to 6 hours. Afterwards, you go home as usual.
That is why preparation matters so much. Before any ceremony, our guardian talks with you, you fill in a health questionnaire and you receive guidance so you arrive well.
Why this fear exists
Often the fear of “losing consciousness” is, deep down, the fear of losing control of your own life. The ceremony takes place in a prepared space, with people who guide each step with care. You do not have to control everything on your own: you can surrender to the experience knowing you are cared for the whole time.
What a person takes from the night is usually the very opposite of a blackout: a vivid memory of what they saw and felt, and more clarity to do what they already knew they needed to do.
